The San Mateo County Libraries is seeking candidates for the position of Communications Manager. The Communications Manager will have the unique opportunity to engage our diverse communities and improve library services through the effective planning and implementation of marketing and public relations activities. Reporting to the Director of Library Services, the Communications Manager will plan, direct and implement a wide range of communication, community and media relations programs that promote library services.
The San Mateo County Libraries are a Joint Powers Authority comprised of the cities of Atherton, Belmont, Brisbane, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Half Moon Bay, Millbrae, Pacifica, Portola Valley, San Carlos, Woodside and the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County. Named a four star library by Library Journal for the eighth consecutive year, SMCL ranked 2nd in California among similar peer libraries. Serving a population of 270,000 residents, SMCL circulated over 3.4 million items to 2.2 million visitors last year.

Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in public relations, communications, journalism, business or public administration or a related field; 5 years of management experience in public affairs, media relations or related area; knowledge of administrative principles and practices, including goal setting, program development, implementation and evaluation, as well as public information, media relations and community outreach project and program development; a demonstrated understanding of technology, new consumer trends and the latest in social media innovation and tools; and strong supervisory, strategic planning, analytical, interpersonal, written/verbal communication and problem-solving skills.
