The University of California Hastings College of the Law was founded in 1878 as the law department of the University of California and was the first law school in California. The Assistant Director works closely with the Director of External Relations in developing and implementing strategies to build public understanding and support for the college’s mission, with a strong emphasis on institutional advancement, government, community and media relations and academic reputation. Responsibilities include writing, sourcing and editing, and distributing a wide variety of content, online and off, all optimized for user experience; serving as an articulate, enthusiastic, informed and visible spokesperson for the college to build and maintain relationships; translating strategy into action plans and outcomes; connecting with faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members to identify great ideas that help drive PR strategy or partnership opportunities; and managing external vendors, including writers, videographers, photographers, printers, designers, mailers, etc., from bidding and contracts through invoice.

Requires a highly organized, enthusiastic and creative professional with a Bachelor’s degree, a minimum of three years’ experience planning, writing, editing and producing stories, announcements, reports or other publications and multi-media content, and strong public relations, public speaking and community outreach experience. Must have extensive experience using email tools and social media, significant experience developing and implementing communications plans, experience using metrics and other assessment systems and tools to measure effectiveness of communications initiatives and adjust programs, and outstanding writing and editing skills, including the ability to execute first drafts quickly, and at least, decent photo and video skills. Exceptional verbal, interpersonal communication, active listening and political acumen skills are necessary as are expert knowledge of new communications channels/social media and other online technologies, basic knowledge of law, law schools and the legal marketplace, familiarity with academic culture and processes and policies at educational institutions, and the ability to employ effective SEO techniques and write great headlines. A strong design sensibility and the ability to ensure production of high-quality and innovative creative work within budget and time constraints is required, along with a demonstrated mastery of all core public relations skills, including media relations, pitch development and message development and knowledge of DMCA, Fair Use, CAN-SPAM and industry email marketing best practices. JD is a plus.

This full-time opportunity offers an annual salary range of $59,337-$83,060 (commensurate with qualifications) plus an excellent benefits package.
